Fossil Fuels Today

We're running out of fossil fuels, that's a given. For us old guys though, that really is a new concept, and fuel-efficiency is something we all struggle with.

On this site, we help you with all the aspects of fuel economy, and we'll do all of this for free.

Aren't we nice people? Yes, we are!

Tip 1: Fuel-efficient Driving

The high cost of gas has made it desirable for many people to reduce the amount of gas that they are using. It is also a good idea to cut down on your fuel burn because of the damage that the emissions do to the environment. Most people think that the way to do this is by getting a more fuel efficient vehicle. While this is certainly a good way to save on gas there are a number of other things you can do like fuel efficient driving.

The biggest waste of gas is aggressive driving. Constantly accelerating and braking will burn a lot more fuel. This is especially true if you are accelerating quickly. It is much more efficient to accelerate smoothly and as far as possible to try to maintain a constant speed. Although this obviously isn't going to happen while driving in the city you can still save gas by keeping your acceleration slower and smoother. When driving on the highway using cruise control can be a huge help in saving gas. Cruise control will allow you to easily maintain a constant speed and this will help you to conserve fuel.

The other big factor that can help to save fuel is to obey the speed limit. All cars have an optimum speed range at which they get the best fuel efficiency and it does vary from one car to another but in almost all cases that optimum range is less than sixty miles per hour. At speeds above this the fuel efficiency of all cars drops off dramatically you can save a lot of gas by staying within the speed limit. You can also save fuel by using your cars overdrive gear, in fact that's why it's there. The overdrive gear will allow your engine to run at a lower speed and burn less fuel.

The more weight that you have in your car the more fuel you will need in order to move your vehicle. Unfortunately most of us have all kinds of stuff that we don't really need in our cars, we often treat them as a storage area for things that we have nowhere else to put. The problem is that this significantly reduces the fuel efficiency of your car. If you have any excess weight in your vehicle get it out of there and you will find that you save money on gas.

Any fuel that is used while your car idles is fuel that is being wasted, you are burning gas and not going anywhere. If you are going to be sitting somewhere for more than a few seconds turn your car off rather than sitting at idle. Not only does this save fuel it will significantly reduce the amount of emissions released by your vehicle. A lot of people have somehow gotten the idea that turning off their engine and restarting it will waste more fuel than leaving your car at idle. This isn't true, in almost all cases you are better off turning your car off rather than sitting at idle.
